Genital warts » treatment


Medical treatment:

Various types of medications are used for treating genital warts these include:

 • Podofilox (Condylox) - this is used topically to remove lesions

 • Trichloro acetic acid - this is used topically to remove lesions. side effects are burning sensation and pain.

 • Podophyllum resin (Pod-Ben-25, Podofin) - this is used topically to remove genital warts by stopping the cell growth.

 • 5-Fluorouracil (Efudex) - it is applied as cream to treat genital warts. Side effects are burning sensation, irritation.

 • Imiquimod (Aldara) - it is also applied as cream. side effects are: skin irritation

 • Interferon Alfa - it stimulates body immune system and is used to remove lesions

Alternative treatment includes:

Cryotherapy - in this liquid nitrogen is used to freeze more persistent warts. This is not recommended for young children.

Electrodesiccation - in this local anesthesia is given to the patient and an electric current is used to destroy the warts.

Laser treatment - in this method anesthesia is given to the patient and an intense beam of light is used to treat warts. It is costly, takes more time to heal.

Surgery - in this method local anesthesia is given to the patients and then the warts are cut. This method is generally used when warts are of small size and number.
