Hypothyroidism is a common endocrine disorder, in which the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone. The thyroid, which is a small butterfly-shaped gland located in the front of the neck. Thyroid hormones are chemical messengers that signal the body to increase oxygen use. Since the main purpose of thyroid hormone is to run the bodys metabolism, people with Hypothyroidism will have symptoms associated with a slow metabolism. Hypothyroidism can also be lack of thyroid hormone secretion due to inadequate secretion of either thyrotropin [TSH] from the pituitary gland or thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) from the hypothalamus (secondary or tertiary hypothyroidism). Women are affected more than men, especially as they age. Low thyroid hormone levels decrease metabolism, and increase the risk of other health issues such as heart disease and problems of pregnancy.
