Behavioral treatments - Establish a regular bedtime and a regular wake-up time, avoid eating or drinking too much before bedtime, avoid exercising vigorously, consuming alcohol, or using nicotine (cigarettes) in the three hours before bedtime and avoid daytime napping.

Relaxation therapy - involves progressively relaxing the muscles from the head to feet
Cognitive behavioral therapy - involves education about sleep needs, sleep expectations, and a discussion of anxiety and catastrophic thinking about sleep.

Medications - Some of these drugs cause significant sleepiness include-

• Benzodiazepines
• Antidepressants/anti-anxiety medications
• Ramelteon
• Melatonin - Melatonin is a hormone that is normally produced by the body's pineal gland.

Medications that contain an antihistamine and a pain reliever are not recommended unless a person has pain and difficulty sleeping.

Alternative treatments - including herbal products, homeopathy.
