Osteoarthritis » symptoms

Common symptoms of osteoarthritis:

• Joint deformity (usually in later stages of osteoarthritis).

• Joint tenderness and occasional swelling.

• Limited joint motion and crepitation (joint cracking or creaking), accompanied by pain.

• No flexibility in joints and stiffness in joints.

• Osteophytes (bony outgrowths can be felt under the skin).

• Pain can also present even during rest, depending on the stage of the disease.

• Painful hands, hips, knees, and feet; sometimes pain is felt in the back along the spine.

• Temporary stiffness (usually less than an hour) after periods of inactivity.

Osteoarthritis has an asymmetric pattern and it does not affect all joints equally so specific symptoms include,

• Hand - enlargements of the last joints, middle joints of the finger and joint where the hand and wrist meet.

• Feet - inflammation of the joint at the base of the big toe.

• Knee - changes in the alignment of the knee, including a bow-legged or a knock-kneed appearance.

• Hips - producing pain and restricting motion of these joints.

• Spine - Bony outgrowths in the lower spine causing low back pain and pain in the legs.

• Shoulders - vague shoulder, distinct pain and restriction of movement.
