Sickle Cell Anemia » diagnosis


Complete Blood Count (CBC) - in this small amount of blood is taken from the patient body and all the cells are counted to check for anemia.

Sickle cell test - in this small amount of blood is taken from patient’s vein and is collected in a small glass tube or on a slide. It is done to check for the presence of abnormal hemoglobin that cause sickle cell anemia.

Hemoglobin electrophoresis - in this small amount of blood is taken from patient’s veins and is collected over a slide or in a small tube. It is done to measure the different types of oxygen carrying substances and to determine the various types of hemoglobin, abnormal hemoglobin. It uses the principle of electrophoresis.

Screening test for new born babies - in this small amount of blood is taken from baby heel with the help of needle prick for detection of sickle cell anemia.

Sickledex test - in this small amount of blood is taken from patients body and a deoxygenating agent is added and then lab analysis is done. If 25% of red blood cells assume sickle shape after adding this agent then we can confirm presence of sickle cell anemia.

Amniocentesis - in this test small amount of fluid is taken from amniotic pocket near fetus with the help of needle and fluid is sent for lab analysis to detect the presence of sickle-cell anemia.
