Question
(Posted on : 07 Jan 2009 ) Hi! I was almost ready to start my IVF affter having tried a few doctors and considerable looking around for over 2 years. All my blood work and ultrasounds were normal for the past few years except for a few cysts on my rt ovary which were eventually gone after a few months. Recently though I had a few months of missed periods which hasnt happened to me for a very long time. I had irregular periods when I first hit puberty at 14. When I visited my IVF doctor they did an ultrasound n a polyp was found. it was removed by a regular hysteroscopy. I was put on birth control pills for about 10 dasy right before surgery. After the sugery I have been having pain my right knee and right lower abdomen. The day after the surgery I jumped up in pain when I streteched my right leg out. I did have lower back pain for the past few years and after going to a chiro I was told it was sciatic nerve pain. I dont know if this pain aft er the surgery is related to my sciatic nerve pain. Also now in a blood test they found that my TSH levels were high(5.6) and now I am on lovothyroxine. About 8 months ago I had realised a sudden weight gain of about 15lbs. When I went to my ob-gyn they did other tests and found that I was anemic. They just brushed me off when I spoke about my concerns of weight gain and mood swings. My question is now how will this effect my plans of having a baby through IVF since that is my only option. How will this thyroid issue effect my well being since I will be going through some hormone treatment for ivf as well. What kind of physical, emotional and psychological impact will all of these hormones have on my body. I dont want to be left with severe side effects and an a body completely outta whack from all these treatments if I do get pregnant and end up having a baby eventually through ivf. Also, right now because of the surgery and all of these issues surfacing including my thyroid I kinda feel emotionally unstable and distraught. Do all these symptoms and pains relae to one another. Need help! Please Advise! |

Doctor's Response (Posted on : 07 Jan 2009 ) Right away we can see complex disease pattern in your case. Lets split this into hormonal part and infertility part. Increased TSH levels indicate hypothroidism or low thyroid. This will lead to weight gain and mood swings. Usually anxiety is more common in hyperthyroidism than hypo. Are you still continuing your levothyroxine dose ? The sciatic pain may be associated with either a complication of surgery or complication of anesthesia. As we read this pain is no longer an issue. Anemia is common in women and it can be treated by iron medications. In Polycystic Ovarian Syndrom with cysts in the ovary there is increased hair growth on face and weight gain. Did you ob-gyn say that you have any ovulation problems ? We will need your answers to further identify the real problem and suggest a solution. |
