Question
(Posted on : 11 Dec 2008 ) Thanks Dr Deepthi, I would like to add she was on Isonex and Pyrazinamide also inspite of that SGOT and SGPT were high. But today she has been admitted to the hospital as there is fluid in lungs and doctors are going to assess if it is malignant or MDR. Any ideas what could be the treatment? I am not in with them as am abroad so if would like to know anything else please let me know. Thanks. |

Doctor's Response (Posted on : 11 Dec 2008 ) Fluid in the lungs can be an abscess possibly due to Multi-drug Resistance (MDR). MDR is a less communicable form but has increased mortality (or risk of death) almost close to lung cancer. The treatment of MDR-TB has to be undertaken at specialist clinics. We can not give an definitive answer to what is the next best treatment option, the treating physician will consider which drugs she has taken, and for what drugs she has resistance to before advising a new treatment line. It could be Ethambutol, aminoglycosides, quinolones. As a care giver your role is definitive here, your mother has to follow the treatment else she will get into the Extensively drug resistant (XDR) form of TB which is even more serious and difficult to manage. If the result of her biopsy turns out to be lung cancer the treatment options are limited. Please contact us if you have further information on her condition. |
