Question (Posted on :  21 Oct 2008 )

During a routine medical check up it was noticed that my serum bilirubin is elevating even though I am not getting any symptoms of jauntice. LFT is repeated for several times and each time noticed that the serum bilirubin is between 2.5 and 3. I consulted our panel doctor and he advised me to under go liver biopsy test, which could reveal any problem with the liver. Since I am not getting any pain or symtoms of fever I could not under go the same. Now I observed that, during the lipid profile test, my total cholestrol level is 209, Triglycerides are 230 HDL 38, LDL 120.Is there any relation between the Serum bilirubin ? I am 36 years old, Lean personality (65 KG AND 174 CM HEIGHT), Non-smoker and non-alchoholic, Married and having one kid of 2 years old. Doing regular exercise ( 30 mts (Min) shuttle badminton in every morning). Occasionally taking non vegitarian food.Kindly advice me to reduce the serum cholestrol, serum bilirubin. My nature of job is office work. Spending more that 6 hours a day infront of computer screen.
Doctor's Response (Posted on : 21 Oct 2008 )

Cholesterol levels are not related to bilirubin levels. You should get the liver biopsy done and the biopsy reported in a place where it is being seen by an experienced Pathologist. Liver biopsy is harmless and in your case, it will put your worry at rest, if the doctor finds that it is something called Dubin-Johnson syndrome or Rotor syndome. Gilbert syndrome is unlikely, but also harmless. Dont skip meals at any time. Dont worry about bilirubin values alone. They wont harm you at all. You should take rest and medications only if your liver enzymes become elevated.
