Question (Posted on :  23 Oct 2008 )

My daughter is 8.5 years old. She has always has eczema since she was an infant. She was later diagnosed with licum planus. Now, shes been diagnosed with alopecia. Are all of these realted? What is the best cure? Will she be cure permanently?
Doctor's Response (Posted on : 23 Oct 2008 )

Atopic dermatitis is a genetic disorder wherein the child has an innate tendency to react to most allergens. Lichen planus on the other hand is due to an allergy to components of once own skin - an auto immune disorder. the most accepted treatment is corticosteroids given till resolution and then tapered. you should avoid all artificial flavours and preservatives which means only home cooked food. as the reason for the onset of auto immune disease is not yet known there is no way one can say that the disease is cured once remission is attained. but amongst the autoimmune diseases Lichen planus usually remits within a few months with appropiate treatment.if you have any qualms about using steroids ( quiet safe under medical supervision) you could try narrow band UVB phototherapy which would also help the child's atopic dermatitis like the steroids
