Doctor's Response (Posted on : 21 Oct 2008 )

Smoking is an addiction which is very difficult to overcome and which easily overcomes the person. First you need to draw up a list of the " advantages " and disadvantages of smoking, so that the reason you want to stop is clear in your mind. Next you need to list up the anticipated difficulties (especially from failed earlier attempts) so that you have a solution for facing them this time. Third, you have to identify all the factors, persons, situations, time, etc., which increase your smoking as well as those which decrease it. You need to plan how to remove or decrease the factors increasing your habit and how to facilitate the factors which help to avoid smoking. Then, you have to take the plunge and STOP! Gradual stopping never works. It fools you into thinking that you are gaining control. But, like a pendulum, it always swings up and the problem is back again. The first few days and weeks will be tough but the difficulty and craving for a smoke will become less and less with time, so you will find yourself in a stronger position soon. You need to use the lists made earlier and see that addicting factors are avoided and protecting factors are promoted. Remembering the advantages of stopping will give you more motivation. Look for difficulties which made earlier attempts a failure will keep you on your guard to see that it doesn't happen so again. COMMIT YOURSELF TO QUITTING SMOKING- to your family, friends and others. Make it an effort for the sake of your family's welfare as well as yours. Remember you are the property of your family and you have no right to burn up your body and life! Some people find making a religious vow gives them strength to win.Keeping a dairy of your daily activities will help monitor your behaviour and help plan your approach better. Nicotine chewing gum and nicotine patches can help get over the initial difficult period by reducing craving. Using family and other support will be of great help. ALWAYS REMEMBER THE UGLY SIDE OF SMOKING. Many wives have told their husbands that kissing a smoker is like licking an ash tray! The advertisements never show what happened to the Marlborough man when he got older. Smoking can cause impotence and infertility! Cigarette smokers usurp their sons' rights: they light their own pyre every day!Using a multifaceted approach gives more chances of success. If you fail, analyze why and ensure victory next time.
