Doctor's Response (Posted on : 22 Oct 2008 )

From the details given by you, I think you are suffering from a disease in the mouth called " Oral Submucous Fibrosis " (OSF). It is a condition which is caused by chewing tobacco and/or pan masala and is prevalent in India. It is common in young adults who are addicted to tobacco or pan masala (gutka). Initially it starts as mouth ulcers, burning in the mouth and slowly progresses to inability to open the mouth properly. In severe cases, the patient cannot even drink water. The remedy is mainly prevention by avoiding tobacco altogether. The other therapies consist of jaw expanders or later on in severe cases surgery. The first thing that you need to do is to stop chewing tobacco. Next see a ENT specialist to rule out any other condition that is causing the disease.
