Question (Posted on :  04 Mar 2008 )

dear sir, my wife has been suffering from depression and consuming risdone 1 and serenace 1.5 from past few years last seven years or more ( i am not sure) she had mood fluctuations and kept herself aloof from social gathering add to it anxiety and fear . I was unaware of this fact . but now she appears to be very much normal from past 1 year though she skips the medeicene very often . could it be fatal. Is there any permenant cure for this or is it only to be controlled by daily consumption of dosage. We have a child and would like to plan for the second, but the birth of my first child was itself a mental trauma for me and so I am bit hesitant. please reply. sincerely yours.........
Doctor's Response (Posted on : 04 Mar 2008 )

Your wife is suffering from Bipolar disorder where they have a combination of depression and anger leading to mood fluctuations. This is a treatable condition and may improve with better social support and medications. It is not advisable to skip the medicines, it is best to gradually decrease the dose and stop. If there is an increase in her social interactions and reduced mood fluctuations it is a better sign. Some women have mood swings around periods/menses this is not a psychiatric illness but is more related to hormonal changes.
