Question (Posted on :  18 Mar 2008 )

Since the past couple of months my periods have occurrd in the folling manner: September 13th to 21st October -nothing November 3rd November to 20th December -am still waiting..... I have lost weight recently and I went to the doctor who did all the required test to rule out PCO. I have been recommneded to take 2 tabs of 5mg Provera for 3 cycles to regularise my period. My concerns are: 1. Is this a brith control pill which blocks ovulations? 2. Am 37yrs and am getting married in feb'09 after which i plan to have baby. Will taking this tablet cause any harm ? 3. I also want to know how long it may take to conceive after i stop the pill in feb'09? Thanks

Provera is a progesterone preparation which induces periods following earlier stimulation by estrogen, If you get bleeding when you stop provera it means that your estrogen cycle is functioning. It has no direct link to ovulation. Taking progesterone may delay your periods, but you are only taking a small dose so you need not worry, If your ovulation is working fine there should be no problems with conception following your marriage in Feb 2009.
